Old School Pineapple Salad

Pineapple Salad , a classic old school recipe. It’s such a simple recipe and quite tasty! This salad follows the same basic concept of Southern Pear Salad.

I remember the pear version being served more often, but on occasion, the pineapple version made it’s appearance on the table.

Back in the day, as they say, mayonnaise was often used as a simple salad dressing. Of course that was before we had a gazillion options for salad dressings as we do today.

The combination of flavors will surprise you at how good it taste if you’ve never had pineapple salad. If you’re not a fan of mayonnaise, you could substitute cottage cheese instead.

I had one reader comment that pineapple salad was still one of their mother’s favorites. So bring back these classic salads to the table soon. I’ll tell you how….

Best Pineapple Cheese Mayonnaise Salad

Ingredients

  • 1 Can of Pineapple Rings
  • Fresh Lettuce
  • Mayonnaise, preferably Duke’s
  • Grated Cheddar Cheese
Customarily these salads would be assembled as individual servings. If you like you can assemble a platter for self service.

Lay a bed of lettuce on each plate.

Next, add two slices of pineapple per person.

Top the pineapple slices with a dollop of mayonnaise.

Finally, add a bit of  shredded cheddar cheese, just on top of the mayonnaise dollop.

While the combination of ingredients may seem a bit strange, it all works so well together.

  1. OMG, finally i found this recipe!!!! …My grandparents made this for us when we were children, then my sister made it one year while at her house for Christmas and i’ve recently wondered where to find it. Unfortunately, my sister even forgot how to make it! lol …I will let her know, i found it again …Thanks so much for posting this, much gratitude to you! <3

  2. This was a staple pre-dinner salad at my great-grandmothers house (dob 1915) and my grandmother’s house (dob 1935) I found this post because I have always wondered if pineapple salad had an official name, AND where it originated. My whole life I have never seen anyone else eat it, I was starting to believe it was somethings she made up hahaha.
Unfortunately I found very little information on this salad, and nothing with her version of the salad.

One thing I cannot stress enough to people who are trying this for the first time, Grate your own cheddar cheese, packaged shredded cheese is a completely different taste and it just doesn’t do this salad justice. If you absolutely refuse to do this, then buy the bag labeled thick shreds. I remember ONE time my grandma had to use bagged shredded cheese and it was so memorable you would think she burnt the thanksgiving turkey. It was terrible by comparison and no one ate the salad that night.

Another variation if anyone wants to try, is that she always used Miracle Whip never mayonnaise. Ive actually never had this particular salad with mayonnaise, but thats always a been a demographic disagreement in the south, which recipes must use Dukes and which should be Miracle whip, as far as this salad goes I choose Miracle Whip, and I just want to acknowledge miracle whip is technically salad dressing, just saying 😉 hehehe

Thats the southern woman’s kitchen tug of war that never ends hahaha

Thank you so much for posting this, I was so happy to find it online.

  3. My mom use to make this all the time to go with dinner. My brother and I loved it. We affectionately called it White Trash salad.
