Egg Roll In A Bowl Recipe

Enjoy a delicious low carb meal with Egg Roll In A Bowl! This delicious stir fry of pork, cabbage and carrots in an aromatic sauce will become a favorite supper option. If you love egg rolls, you’ll love the un-wrapped option.

I’m not gonna lie, I am a carb lover. If there was a club, I’d be sitting in the first row. Sometimes hearing the phrase low carb can send a small panic wave through my bones. Will it taste good? I promise you will not be disappointed with this flavorful meal!

The first time I saw a recipe for an egg roll stir fry, it was a post from South Your Mouth. Mandy’s recipe was my inspiration in making this dish. It went on my list of recipes I want to try. Very slightly modifying her recipe to use ingredients I had on hand, we’ve enjoyed this meal at least once a month since I first made it.

One ingredient that I love to keep on hand is toasted sesame oil. It is amazing! Seriously!! I start with a couple of teaspoons for this recipe. It smells amazing! I also use it in other stir fry recipes.

Before we begin the actual cooking process, we need to make the sauce to let those flavors mingle. The soy sauce, garlic and ginger paste sauce can be made the day before and refrigerated. Generally, I just make mine an hour or so ahead though.

Wait til you smell it! OH MY STARS – it’s amazing! Keep this simple sauce recipe handy because it would be great for grilled chicken and other dishes too. Mr. Simply Southern likes dipping raw veggies in it.

Stir Fry Sauce - Soy sauce, garlic and ginger paste

Random thought to insert: It’s been four years today (April 23rd) that I started Julia’s Simply Southern. YAY, 4 year blogiversary!

Egg Roll Stir Fry Sauce

To make the sauce you’ll need soy sauce, 4 cloves of garlic and ginger paste. If you’re a timid garlic user, you gotta trust me on this and use all 4 cloves. The fresh garlic paste is amazing too. I keep a tube in my refrigerator at all times.

Gourmet Garden fresh ginger paste

In a measuring cup, add 1/3 cup of soy sauce. Next, mince the garlic cloves and add it to the soy sauce. Finally, add in 1 teaspoon of the ginger paste. Whisk to combine. Set aside or refrigerate until ready to use.

Vegetable stir fry with sausage

Egg Roll In a Bowl

Ingredients:

  • Stir Fry Sauce
  • 2 tsp Toasted Sesame Oil
  • 1 lb Ground Mild Italian Sausage ( breakfast sausage or plain ground pork would work fine too)
  • 1 Small to Medium Head of Green Cabbage, sliced
  • 2 Large Carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 1 Onion, diced (optional)
  • Cracked Black Pepper, to taste
  • Top with fresh scallions, if desired

Step 1: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the toasted sesame oil and ground pork sausage. Breaking the pork apart, cook until browned. About half way through cooking the ground pork sausage, go ahead and add the carrots.

Next Step: Next, add the sliced cabbage to the pork mixture and season with black pepper. Sometimes I use an onion in this recipe and sometimes I don’t. If you’re using diced onion, go ahead and add that in too. Stir fry until the cabbage reaches your desired level of tenderness. This only takes a few minutes.

Step 3: Finally, add the stir fry sauce you made before cooking. Stir to incorporate all of the ingredients with the sauce and cook an additional 2 minutes. Serve hot. Garnish with fresh chopped scallions if desired.

There you have it – one fast and delicious low carb meal! It’s WOWZA on the flavor scale!
