This appetizer is perfect for any gathering…perfect for holidays, new year celebrations or gatherings of friends.

I must confess that this has been a very busy end of the year for me this year. I have loved being able to share so many delicious recipe with y’all. I’m also looking forward to a rest cause I’m pooped. HaHa!

I’ll have family and friends gathering here in a few days for our annual Christmas dinner that we host and after it’s over I plan to have a week of rest.

Sausage Cups with Cream Cheese

You’ll find the filling of this recipe handy and versatile. Besides using it as a savory filling in these fillo cups, it could be spread on pastry then rolled up, cut and baked for delicious pinwheels….or as a fried wonton filling.

What Ingredients Do You Need For These Savory Mini Tartlets?

Make these sausage in tart shell appetizers with just 5 ingredients plus a little parsley for garnish if desired. Here’s what you’ll need: hot breakfast sausage, cream cheese, Athens miniature fillo tart shells, sharp cheddar cheese, smoked cheddar cheese…plus a tablespoon of dried parsley for garnish.

Make Ahead Appetizers

Can these hot sausage in tart shells be made ahead? Yes! In fact, I make the filling and baked up a batch then allowed them to cool completely. I packed them up for the freezer and froze them. Just reheat in the oven and serve.

Smokey Cheesy Sausage Phyllo Cups

Okay, let’s make the filling for these out of this world delicious appetizers!

Step 1: Cook the breakfast sausage in a small frying pan and crumble into small pieces. When cooked through, drain well.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (176°C)

Step 2: Place the cooked sausage, cream cheese and grated cheeses into a mixing bowl. Use a hand mixer to combine.

Step 3: Arrange tart shells on a baking sheet. Fill the tart shells with a teaspoon or so of the filling mixture. I used two small spoons to fill the shells and thought it made it a bit easier. Bake for 10 minutes.

Garnish with dried parsley (if desired) and serve immediately.
