In this post I am sharing the recipe for sweet and savory Blackberry Grits.
Blackberry Grits! Yes, you read that right. Before you go thinking this Southern girl has gone crazy, just hear me out. I am always happy to find places I enjoy for the occasional breakfast or brunch out.
This dish was inspired from such an outing to a great place called Another Broken Egg Cafe. The restaurant seems to be quite popular and has locations all over the US.
My first visit here, I was reading over the menu and came across Blackberry Grits. My first thought was “Why would anyone do that to grits?” but I was intrigued. Don’t get me wrong, I’m never giving up my traditional grits with salt, pepper and butter. I call those my everyday grits. Blackberry grits however are something I now enjoy on occasion.
My intrigue for this dish grew stronger as a server at the restaurant went walking by, with you guessed it, blackberry grits. They looked wonderful! I like blackberries and I like grits. So, why not together? My mind was settled, I was going to order it and give it a try!
The stewed blackberries have their hint of sweet and tart working so well with the savory of the grits with salt, pepper and creamy butter. Perfect to change things up for breakfast at home or when hosting a brunch party.
Sweet and Savory Grits Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 c Cooked Grits
- 6 oz Fresh Blackberries
- 1/4 c Water
- 1 tsp Cornstarch
- 2 tbs Granulated Sugar
Southern Grits with Blackberries
Cook grits according to package directions to yield four cups of cooked grits.
While the grits are cooking you’ll have plenty of time to prepare the stewed blackberries.
This recipe will serve 4-6 people and can be easily doubled if you’re serving guests.
Heat a small sauce pan over medium heat.
Add the fresh blackberries and sugar.
Add the water to a liquid measuring cup and add the cornstarch. Mix to combine into a slurry mixture.
Add the slurry mixture to the sauce pan.
Cook 3-4 minutes. That’s plenty of time to stew the berries. Remove from heat and reserve until ready to serve.
Breakfast Grits with Stewed Blackberries
The blackberries aren’t overly sweet, just enough sugar was added to enhance the sweet and cut the tart slightly.
Add cooked grits to serving bowls and top with some of the stewed blackberries.
I recommend to those eating this dish that you go ahead and add salt, pepper with a pat of butter as you normally would. Enjoy! The flavors all work well together and are sure to please the palate.

First, I love Another Broken Egg Cafe! We have one here in the Florida panhandle and I have never been disappointed. Second, oh my goodness, I would have never put blackberries and grits together! I think I am going to have to give this a try :-)
