Black Eyed Peas Recipe

In this post I’m sharing how to cook Black Eyed Peas Recipe.
 
 
Black Eyed Peas do not require soaking overnight like some dried beans. I soak them anyways.  A southern favorite side dish and you’re sure to find these on the dinner table on New Year’s Day! It’s a southern tradition!
 
Traditions run deep and field peas hold a special place in our hearts here in the South. Black eyed peas served alongside some type of pork and greens make up the traditional Southern new year day dinner. We’re partial to collard greens with our new year meal.
 
Black eyed peas seem to be one of those foods that people either love them or don’t care for them at all. I recall having one neighbor who was adamant that these peas tastes like dirt. HaHa! 
 
Don’t wait to serve these peas up for the new year meal, they make a delicious side any time of the year.
 

New Years Southern Black Eyed Peas Recipe

 
Here’s what you’ll need to make your Southern side dish (printable recipe card further down in the post with all the details):
 
  • 1 pound of Dried Black Eye Peas
  • A Ham Hock or Country Ham Cooking Pieces
  • Bacon Grease
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • Cayenne Pepper (optional)
  • small Onion , diced (optional)
  • Chicken Stock

In a large pot add the bacon grease and ham hock, warm over medium heat until the pork pieces begin to sizzle.

Add the peas and cover 1″ above with chicken stock. You can also combine chicken stock and water to get the desired amount of liquid.

Add seasonings. Bring pot to a boil and then turn the heat down to medium low and cover to simmer until peas are tender. Don’t cover completely to allow steam to escape.

Near the end of cooking, taste the peas for tenderness and adjust the seasonings if needed.

Black Eyed Peas Recipe

Black eyed peas, also known as field peas, are among the favorite traditional sides for the new years day meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Dried Black Eye Peas

  • 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper optional
  • 1 small Onion diced (optional)
  • Chicken Stock

Instructions

  • In a large pot add the bacon grease and ham hock, warm over medium heat until the pork pieces begin to sizzle.
  • Next, add the peas and cover 1" above with chicken stock. You can also combine chicken stock and water to get the desired amount of liquid.
  • Add the onion and seasonings. Bring pot to a boil and then turn the heat down to medium low and cover to simmer until peas are tender – 1½ – 2 hours. Don’t cover completely to allow steam to escape.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

Soaking is not required for black eyed peas but can be done to aid with faster cooking.
Peas can be cooked in the Crock Pot for 8 to 10 hours on low until tender.
