Glazed Ham with a Honey Orange Glaze

In this post I’m sharing the recipe for Glazed Ham with a Honey Orange Glaze.

When most of us think of our main holiday meals, we associate it with the popular meat main course. On Thanksgiving you have the traditional turkey. For Christmas there’s the mix of turkey, ham, a beef roast…or all three. Traditional Easter entrée dishes include a Glazed Ham or lamb dish. A glazed ham recipe is by far the more popular choice for the Easter meal.

What is the Best Ham Glaze? Some of the more popular ham glazes include a pineapple glaze, a glaze made with Coca Cola®, brown sugar glazes or honey glazes. They’re all delicious! Personally, the best ham glaze in my book is the Honey Orange Glaze I’m about to share with you.

You may be wondering why I think this glazed ham recipe is so special. The main reason is the mister is not a big fan of glazed hams. I know, most people do like them, myself included.

The honey orange glaze has a very minimal amount of brown sugar so the overall sweetness is not over powering. The honey provides a delicate sweetness and the orange adds a light fresh citrus flavor that work well with the smokey and slightly salty flavor of the ham.

It is the only glaze recipe I can get away with at my house.

Questions that are often asked about glazing a ham:

  • How do you glaze a fully cooked ham?
  • How do you make honey glaze for ham?
  • Do you glaze a ham before or after cooking?

I am going to answer all of these questions as we go through the glazing process. So let’s get started.

First of all, what kind of ham are we glazing? The hams we use to glaze are what are referred to in the South as “city hams”. These are your fully cooked hams that are smoked and what you’ll find in your grocery stores.

Fully cooked ham doesn’t mean open the package and start chowing down. There’s a re-heating or what we think of as “cooking the ham” to be done. Basically, all you really need to be able to do is read the directions. Simple as that. Making a glaze to make the ham more special is just as easy.

Easy Glaze for Ham

A honey glazed ham usually has other components and not just basting pure honey over a ham. The other ingredients combined with honey can be a Dijon mustard, butter, corn syrup, brown sugar, fruit or citrus to name a few.

Glazing a ham add one more special touch besides flavor. The caramelization that happens to the glaze while it is in the oven makes the ham look better too.

So, let us get started with glazing a fully cooked ham. Depending on the type of glaze, the glazing process does happen during cooking but not usually through the entire cooking process. The glaze will be introduced towards the end of the cooking time.

Cooks Note: You want to start with a room temperature ham so bring it out of the refrigerator for an hour before cooking.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate, thawed
  • 1/2 c Honey
  • 2 tsp Brown Sugar

Step 1: Place your ham in a roasting pan with 1/4 cup of water. Cover with foil.

Step 2: Preheat your oven according to the instructions that come with your ham. In this case 275ºF.

Step 3: Calculate cooking time. This will depend on the size of your ham. Recommended cooking times will generally be between 15 to 20 minutes per pound.

My ham is ten pounds so it will need to be in the oven for two and a half hours. Place it into the oven and let it do it’s thing until you get to the last 45 minutes of cooking time. That is where we are going to waive from the oven temperature and begin our glazing.

Step 4: Mix your glaze – the orange juice concentrate, honey and brown sugar. When you reach the last 45 minutes of cooking time, increase the oven temperature to 350°F. Remove the foil from the ham, it’s no longer needed. Apply a layer of glaze and return to the oven. Every 10-15 minutes apply another coat of glaze until the cooking time ends.

Southern Ham Recipes

Ham is best served at room temperature. It’s a personal choice weather to place the entire ham on a platter or to go ahead and carve it for the platter. I prefer to carve it to make it easier for serving. I’m not fond of struggling with a turkey or ham, maybe getting burned a time or two in front of guests. I take care of this before hand so it’s ready to go.

Oh, I wanted to share one of my favorite serving pieces. This is the platter I serve the Easter meat on but you can’t see any of the design once the food has been added.
