Skillet Hot Dog Chili Recipe

In this post I’ll be sharing a fast homemade Skillet Hot Dog Chili Recipe. It is so delicious when you want a quick chili sauce for hot dogs.

One of my family’s favorite meals is hot dogs topped with my old fashioned Southern hot dog chili sauce. It has been in the top ten recipes on the blog for the past six years now.

That is my classic way to prepare hot dog meat sauce just the way that my grandmother used to make it.

Sometimes you want something that doesn’t take quite as much time. So if you’re looking for a quick and easy hot dog chili recipe then this skillet version is for you.

Delicious hot dog chili sauce

This delicious skillet meat sauce has a kick of spice that your family will love.

Whether you prefer just having a chili dog or a Carolina style slaw dog, this sauce is the perfect addition for your meal.

It is so easy to prepare your own homemade hot dog chili sauce. I’ve been asked “what is the best store bought chili for hot dogs” and as far as I am concerned, there isn’t one.

The world’s best hot dog chili sauce will always be the one made in your own home kitchen.

Once you get the hang of making your own hot dog chili you’ll never want store bought again.

How to make ground beef skillet chili for hot dogs

This recipe starts with ground beef, preferably ground chuck or a similar blend with good fat content. The fat adds flavor to any recipe that calls for hamburger meat.

Break the meat up as it browns in a skillet and add in some diced onion when it’s nearly cooked through.

Once the ground beef has cooked, add in your seasonings. A blend of chili powders, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper give this meat sauce the perfect flavor.

The next layer of flavor is a bit of tomato paste. The paste will help give the chili a nice consistency and help thicken the sauce.

You’ll want to stir and incorporate the tomato paste into the meat mixture well.

At this point your nose is enjoying the aroma of your hot dog chili as it cooks.

Just a few more simple ingredients are added to the meat mixture. A little beef stock, a dash of Worcestershire and if you want a little more spice…a dash of cayenne.

Continue to simmer the skillet chili sauce until the stock has reduced and the chili has thickened.

It takes just a few minutes and it’s ready for your hot dogs.

The hot dog wieners can be boiled, grilled or cooked in a skillet.

Yield: 1 pound of meat sauce

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. Ground Beef (Ground Chuck preferably)
  • 1/4 c Diced Onion
  • 1 tbsp. Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tbsp. Hot Mexican Style Chili Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Ground Black Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher Salt
  • 1 tbsp. Tomato Paste
  • 1/2 c Beef Stock
  • Dash of Worcestershire Sauce
  • Dash of Cayenne Pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the ground beef to a shot skillet and break apart; add the diced onion and cook until the meat has browned and cooked through.
  2. Next, add the seasonings and stir to combine.
  3. Add the tomato paste to the meat mixture and stir to incorporate well then add the beef stock and Worcestershire sauce. Continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  4. Serve the chili sauce on top of hot dogs.

Notes

Leftover chili sauce can be frozen and re-heated another time.

If you prefer less spiciness, use all chili powder instead of the hot Mexican style chili powder.

Hot dog wieners can be prepared by boiling, grilling or sautéing in a skillet. The skillet method adds additional flavor. Serve hot dog wieners in a hot dog bun topped with chili sauce, favorite condiment (mustard or ketchup) along with other preferred toppings.

Thanks, Barbara. I had never heard of that chili powder until my husband came walking in with it from a trip to the store. Not what I was expecting but it is delicious.
