In this post I’m sharing my Best Southern Style Baked Beans Recipe.
Y’all, I don’t have a dog named, Duke, keeping the secret family recipe for baked beans but I can tell ya that mine have been declared the best by my family. Sorry, Duke!
The only secret that I’ve kept about this recipe is how crazy easy it is to make. Seriously…so, so easy and you’re gonna love it!
Baked beans seem to be a favorite side dish of summer, or so I think anyways. Baked beans go perfectly with barbecue, burgers and even a fish fry. Most folks seem to love them too and there are hardly any left.
Baked beans are definitely a side dish you want for summer gatherings, like Memorial Day or the 4th of July, to go alongside the coleslaw and potato salad.
Since y’all are company, I pulled out my white casserole dish to make these baked beans. I usually throw them in one of those disposable foil baking pans and call it a day.
Grandma’s Molasses Baked Beans Recipe
I just assume that most people have had or tried baked beans at some point in their life but, if you haven’t, maybe you’re curious where baked beans originated and if they’re good.
Let’s start with, are they good, and the answer is YES. Baked beans are rich in color and flavor and absolutely delicious. They’re a blend of sweet, savory and a bit of a kick at the end. You can go wrong with a flavorful dish that is mostly beans.
Beans are also highly nutritious and a good source of fiber. My recipe also incorporates molasses which is always a better option than refined sugar. Molasses also contains antioxidants.
So…although delicious, skip the store bought canned beans and make your own.
Easy Homemade Baked Beans
As far as where baked beans come from…well, they originated in the U.K.
I know a lot of us probably assumed that this was another fine recipe that was born right here in the South, but now you know. I’m sure we put a delicious twist on it though!
What do you need to make the best baked beans recipe at home? You’ll need a big can of Pork and Beans (that’s right), homemade baked bean sauce, salt, pepper, green bell pepper, onion (I’m using a Vidalia ’cause they’re in season), and bacon.
You can get all the details and printable recipe card further down in the post.
Baked Beans with Bacon
Notice how pretty the bacon looks on top? You guessed it, I did that to show off a little for y’all! The bacon pieces get stirred in after it comes out of the oven so just throw them on top if you want to…I usually do.
