Oven Baked Chili Cheese Hot Dogs

In this post I’ll be sharing an easy meal recipe of Oven Baked Chili Cheese Hot Dogs.

Chili cheese dogs couldn’t be any easier to prepare than to pop them in the oven to bake.

Perhaps this hot dog bake is more of a method to put together an easy meal than a recipe….but that depends on what you choose to use.

The convenience of a store bought canned chili will appeal to some and other folks will want homemade chili sauce.

For my family the best chili cheese dogs are going to be made with my homemade Southern hot dog chili sauce. It’s one of my signature dishes after all.

When I make a batch of hot dog meat sauce you can bet there’s going to be plenty for me to portion out and freeze. That makes it super easy to enjoy chili dogs anytime.

Doesn’t that look good y’all with that ooey gooey cheese melted on top? YUM!

What goes with chili dogs?

  • Condiments like mustard, ketchup or mayonnaise
  • Toppings like coleslaw, pickle relish, sauerkraut, onions or pickles
  • Sides like chips, fries, side salad, or baked beans

How to cook hot dogs in the oven

Y’all, lemme tell ya a funny little story. I don’t usually use whole wheat hot dog buns, not that there’s anything wrong with them.

I prefer the regular ole kind with a middle split so the hot dog stands upright without tipping over.

So I send the mister to the store for me to grab buns and that is what he picks up. He almost always get the whatever it is that I don’t usually use.

I have lots of stories of his store trips but I’ll just save those for another time. He cracks me up y’all!

Place the buns in a rectangle baking dish with a weenie in each one. The type of hot dog wiener you like will work just fine. We seem to prefer the Nathan’s beef franks.

Next, add a generous helping of your chili sauce to the top of each one.

Baked Chili Cheese Dogs

Finish it off with a sprinkling of grated cheese. I love cheddar and that’s what I had on hand.

What is the best cheese for chili cheese dogs? The one that you like best will work just fine. I suggest Cheddar, Monterrey Jack, Pepper Jack or American.

As long as it is a good melty type of cheese it should be just fine.

How to Cook Hot Dogs in the Oven

Oven baked hot dogs with Southern chili and cheese

Place your chili cheese dog “casserole” into a hot oven to hang out until everything is heated through and the cheese is nicely melted.

If you’re worried about the buns toasting too much you can cover will foil if you like while it bakes.

How long do you cook hot dogs in the oven? I go for twenty minutes but as long as everything is heated through and your cheese is melted then you’re golden.

Below you will find the printable recipe card for making this easy and delicious chili cheese dog family dinner.

Just past that I will also include a few more recipes you might enjoy along with the recipe cards for both version of my hot dog chili sauce in case you missed those links above.
