Slow Cooker Cube Steak
Have you ever had the Southern favorite meal of country style steak that is baked in the oven with gravy? If you have, then you know how melt in your mouth tender the meat is and so delicious.
Well, this is like that, except made in the slow cooker instead. The tenderness and flavor are absolutely wonderful.
It is a home cooked meal and that delicious brown gravy is homemade and thickens up with the tender beef in the crock pot.
The Perfect Comfort Food Meal
Y’all, let us take a moment to appreciate how delicious that tender cube steak resting on a bed of fluffy mashed taters looks. Ahhh!
Well, you’ve got to serve the cube steaks with something, so here are a few suggestions that you might enjoy with it:
- Mashed Potatoes – this might be my favorite choice. Creamy, fluffy and so delicious.
- Cooked White Rice
- Buttered Noodles – a delicious side of egg noodles that are so simple and comforting.
- Sautéed Green Beans
- Rolls, Biscuits, or Cornbread
These are just a few suggestions, and I’ve got a lots of wonderful side options on the website that you can check out for more ideas.
Here’s what you’ll need to make Crock Pot Cube Steak
- Beef Cube Steaks – cube steaks (also referred to as minute steak) are tenderized tougher cuts of meat that are usually less expensive and have been tenderized in a “cuber” to help make them more tender. Preparing them in the slow cooker ensured that every bite with be melt in your mouth tender.
- Cooking Oil – I used peanut oil, but your favorite oil for cooking that can also be good in preparing gravy will be fine.
- Flour – all purpose or self rising are find for this recipe.
- Kosher Salt
- Cracked Black Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Beef Stock – the beef stock, or beef broth, creates the delicious brown gravy. Some folks like to use chicken stock, which is fine just a different flavor. In a pinch water or milk work for making a gravy recipe too. Again, the flavor will be different than the brown gravy with beef stock, but still good.
Allow me to take you through the Easy Steps of the Recipe
To start, place a skillet (I used my cast iron frying pan because it holds heat well) on the stove top over medium heat. Next, add a little cooking oil so that it is hot enough to brown the cube steaks.
I like to season in layers so add a pinch of salt and pepper to each side of the beef. Next, season the flour with salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder to dredge the meat in.
Cook in batches so you don’t over-crowd the pan, and place a few of the dredged cube steaks pieces into the hot skillet.
You only need to pan fry to brown one each side. The meat doesn’t have to be cooked all of the way through in this step because it will finish cooking in the slow cooker.
Crockpot Cube Steak
Transfer the cube steaks into the crockery of the your slow cooker after they are browned on each side and continue on with the next batch.
I want to share a little tip that I like to use when making meal in my Crock Pot. Pre-heat your crockery by turning the cooking setting on high and covering with the lid while you prep. That way it is already nice and hot and ready to go when you add the ingredients to the crockery.
Brown the next batch of cubed beef steaks on each side to give that outer layer of flavor to the beef.
Then transfer them to the crockery. Next, we prepare the super easy brown gravy.
The Savory Gravy – Homemade with No Creamed Soups and No Gravy Packets Needed
This is what the bottom of your pan will look like after you’ve finished browning all of your meat pieces. Those bits left in the skillet mixed in with the remaining oil will add a lot of flavor to the gravy.
Add a couple of tablespoons of the seasoned flour mixture to the skillet.
Use a whisk to combine the flour with the pan drippings until well combined then allow the flour mixture, or roux, to cook a bit to cook out that raw flour taste. It takes just a few minutes until the flour mixture is a light golden brown in color.
The next step is to add the beef stock and whisk to combine it with the roux (flour mixture). Cook the gravy mixture for another minute or so.
In this step you are not cooking the gravy until it is thick. So, don’t worry about the gravy being runny at this point. That is how it should be in this recipe.
Slow Cooker Country Style Steak
Pour the brown gravy mixture into the crockery with the cube steak pieces. Cover the crockery with the lid, reduce the cook setting to low and allow it to slow cook for a few hours.
Let it Cook Low and Slow
The gravy will thicken up as it cooks in the slow cooker with the meat, which is why we don’t thicken it up in the skillet.
In three to four hours you will have the most amazing and tender Crock Pot cube steak and gravy ready to enjoy.
Crock Pot Cubed Steak and Gravy
A meal that is perfect for any weeknight that is a pure delight to the taste buds. Give it a try soon and let me know how you enjoy it.
