Easy Homemade Deviled Ham Recipe

In this post I am sharing an Easy Homemade Deviled Ham Recipe. This ham spread for sandwiches is delicious and you’ll love this easy recipe for making your own rather than buying the canned meat at the store.

Y’all, the deviled ham salad does not have mayonnaise, but is still slightly creamy, a little spicy (as the devilish name suggests), and absolutely delicious.

I like to add a layer of my favorite mayonnaise to some white bread and adding a nice layer of the deviled ham to enjoy one of the tastiest sandwiches you’ve ever had. Deviled ham spread is also great with crackers too.

In addition to preparing your own homemade copycat deviled ham, this recipe is a great way to use up leftover ham from family dinner or holiday meals.

Come on friend, let’s head into the kitchen and let me share how I like to make the best deviled ham!

Deviled Ham Salad

Leftover holiday ham transformed into a delicious deviled ham spread for sandwiches.

Y’all, look how scrumptious those sammiches look! Move over plain ole ham sandwiches, cause we are kicking it up a notch with a wonderful deviled ham sandwich!

You will not be disappointed in this delicious homemade sandwich spread my friend.

Deviled Ham Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make the Best Deviled Ham salad recipe:

  • Ham – rough chopped ham, which can come from leftover holiday ham, ham steaks, or the small sliced packaged hams for baking. They will all work wonderfully in this recipe.
  • Black Pepper
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Cayenne Pepper – just a little for that bit of a kick that you need in a “deviled” ham salad.
  • Diced Red Onion – or use green onion if preferred.
  • Pickled Jalapeno Slices – I love the pickled jalapenos in this spread for the added flavors, but without it being too much heat for everyone to enjoy.
  • Sweet Pickle Relish – the hint of sweetness from the sweet relish compliments the kick of spice in this deviled ham spread.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Dijon Mustard

Although my inspiration in creating this recipe came from the canned meat product that you can buy in the grocery store, my recipe has that “Julia Twist” that y’all love in my recipes, and I know you’ll love this deviled ham.

Of course, after you give it a try and you wanna give it your own twist, then get creative and add whatever additional deviled ham ingredients you may enjoy.

Preparing the Deviled Ham Spread

The steps for preparing deviled ham could not be any easier, y’all. Grab your food processor with the blade attachment. Now, if you do not have a food processor, you can certainly do all the chopping by hand.

The food processor just makes quick work in the prep.

Add all of your ingredients to the food processor and pulse everything together a few times until you reach the desired consistency that you prefer for your deviled ham spread.

If needed, take a sec and scrape down the bowl, the pulse another time or two to be sure everything is well combined.

Transfer your deviled ham to a serving bowl and enjoy now, or to an airtight container to store in the refrigerator for later. The deviled ham salad will last up to a week stored in the refrigerator.

What to serve with Deviled Ham?

A vintage bowl with yellow floral containing ham salad spread without mayonnaise.

Deviled ham pairs beautifully with a variety of sides to make a delicious and satisfying meal. Here are some ideas:

  1. Crackers and Bread: Serve it with an assortment of crackers, baguette slices, or fresh bread for easy spreading. Soft white bread or flaky croissants slathered with a little mayonnaise are my favorite way to enjoy my best deviled ham.
  2. Cheese Platter: Compliment the flavors with a selection of cheeses like cheddar, brie, or gouda. Pimento cheese spread would be a great option too.
  3. Pickles and Olives: The tangy taste of pickles and olives balances the richness of the deviled ham. The deviled ham would be a great addition to your holiday relish tray.
  4. Fresh Veggies: Serve with fresh veggies like celery sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber slices, and cherry tomatoes for a refreshing crunch.
  5. Potato Chips: For a salty, crunchy side, add some potato chips to the mix.
  6. Macaroni Salad: always a tasty side for a good sandwich.

And, if any of y’all are like my Daddy, just serve the deviled ham on the side of your meal of beans and cornbread.

I'm a big fan of Underwood Deviled Ham. I've searched for a copycat recipe to no avail; therefore, I'm going to give yours a try next. One question though, can your recipe be canned? Thank you for your time! Cheers!

I hope that you enjoy my deviled ham recipe. I am sure that it could be canned, but I haven't tried canning it and cannot offer tips for doing so.
