Why Roast Radishes? A Surprising Twist on a Classic Veggie

What do roasted radishes taste like?

Y’all, I hate to be the one to add to the list of things that are not a potato, that taste like a potato. But, hear me out. Roasted radishes sort of do. There’s the hint of roasted potato, but I think maybe it is more because they have the same texture after roasting.

The radishes do offer a low carb option and are keto friendly if you’re looking for that sort of dish. I just love them because it is another great vegetable option to add to my choices for delicious easy fix sides to our meals.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Roasted Radishes

Here’s what you’ll need to make my easy roasted radishes recipe:

  • One Pound of Fresh Radishes – washed and dried with paper towels, then trimmed and halved. I discard the trimmed pieces, including the greens because they’re usually very wilted, but the green tops are edible if you want to keep them. If you have chickens, feed the greens to them if you don’t want them.
  • Olive Oil
  • Kosher Salt
  • Cracked Black Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Mrs. Dash Table Blend Seasoning (optional)

Y’all, this is just how I season my radishes, but you can use whatever seasonings or seasoning blends make you happy. I also like to sprinkle just a touch of parsley over the roasted radishes before serving to make them look extra pretty.

Step-by-Step: How to Roast Radishes to Perfection

The first thing is to wash your fresh radishes and pat them dry with paper towels. I like to do this ahead and allow them to fully dry.

Next, prep the radishes by trimming off the ends of the radish greens and root. Then, cut the radishes into even bite sized pieces so they cook evenly.

Preheat your oven.

Next, it is into the mixing bowl to be combined with your seasonings of choice and olive oil. Arrange the seasoned radishes on a cooking sheet in a single layer spacing them out so they aren’t crowded together. You can line your pan with foil or parchment if you like for easy clean up. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t.

Pop that sheet pan into the hot oven and roast until desired tenderness! This should be a 30-minute or less cook time. I find that 25 minutes is the sweet spot in my oven. Allow the radishes to cool slightly before serving.

Tips for Preparing and Enjoying Crispy, Flavorful Roasted Radishes

  • To make perfectly crispy delicious roasted radishes: make sure they are patted dry, use the proper oil, and cook with high heat.
  • Cut the radishes evenly for even cooking.
  • Flavor Variations to Try with Roasted Radishes: Think garlic, fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary, paprika, Italian seasoning, your favorite seasoning blends, or even a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese for a unique twist! I like to keep it simple though with some olive oil and seasonings! Radishes peppery bite does mellow out when roasting, so season them well for the best flavor.
  • Should I peel the radishes, or can I leave the skin on for roasting? There is no need to peel the radishes, plus the skin adds that nice pop of color.

What to Serve with Roasted Radishes:

Chicken Pork (I love serving roasted radishes with stuffed pork tenderloin),  Baked Salmon, or Beef.

Don’t forget other sides to serve with them too!  Potatoes, rice, cooked greens, asparagus, or a side salad.

Kitchen Tools that are Helpful Preparing Roasted Radishes

Cutting board, chef’s knife, mixing bowl, measuring spoons, baking sheet, parchment paper or foil, spatula or tongs, paper towels.

These tools are all helpful, but if y’all are like me you’ll be shaking those seasonings from the heart until it just feels right!
