Slow Cooker Chili Dogs

Lawdy y’all! Doesn’t that make your mouth water? I sure do love a good ole chili dog! I like mine with a bit of yellow mustard, homemade chili for hot dogs, and a bit of diced onion. What do you like on yours?

Folks around here also like to top hot dogs with coleslaw, which is quite delicious.

Other favorite toppings for hot dogs might include: Coney sauce (depending on where you live), mustard, ketchup, pickle relish (sweet or dill), onions, sauerkraut, cheese, chili, jalapenos or other peppers, hot sauce, slaw, and whatever else you might want to throw on there. Make it your own, honey!

Let me share a wonderful tip with you. When you make your dog the way you want it, wrap it up in parchment or aluminum foil and let it hang out a minute. That softens that bun and that hot dog will taste like it came from your favorite hot dog stand.

Homemade Hot Dog Chili Recipe

Ingredients for preparing hot dog chili in the Crock Pot

Here’s what you’ll need to make Julia’s Southern Crock Pot Hot Dog Chili Recipe:

  • Ground Beef: I do prefer a lean minced ground beef mix for this slow cooker recipe.
  • Yellow Onion
  • Good Quality Chili Powder: I say good quality because they are not all the same. I recommend McCormick’s chili powder for preparing hot dog chili.
  • Salt and Black Pepper
  • Beef Stock
  • Ketchup

How is that for a simple list of ingredients? Even though this isn’t quite the same as my old school hot dog chili, it is still an old fashioned way to prepare it. This is the type of chili usually shared at church socials, and it is delicious.

By all means, my friend, if you wanna add other stuff then go for it. This is your perfect topping creation so make it how you want.

Oh, and don’t forget the buns! We like a nice soft bun and I used brioche hot dog buns here.

Cooking ground beef for chili

Begin by browning the ground beef in a hot skillet. That is one of the big ways that this recipe differs from a classic prepared hot dog chili, which cooks in liquid.

Once the meat has browned and cooked through, removed any excess rendered fat from the pan.

Transfer the cooked hamburger to the crockery of your slow cooker.

Next, add your diced onion and seasonings then give it a quick stir to combine everything.

The next super easy step is to add your beef stock and ketchup and give it one more stir into the seasoned meat and onion mixture.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and simmer on the low cook setting for four to six hours.

One more little tip: when I am preparing something in my Crock Pot, I place the crockery in the slow cooker and cover with the lid and pre-heat it on high then adjust the setting as needed for the rest of the cooking duration once the ingredients are added.
